How to Learn Another Language: Insights for success


Have you ever told yourself that you aren’t any good at languages? Was your experience of learning a language at school a bad one? In this workshop you will be introduced to 5 key ingredients in successful language learning and shown how much fun language learning can be.

You will learn what you need to prioritise in your learning, develop your language awareness, practise interacting effectively in another language and learn how to deal with unfamiliar input. Explore strategies for practising and remembering what you learn.

Course materials:
The course fee includes a copy of Sara Cotterall’s (2018) book How to learn another language: Insights for successful language learning.

Target audience:
This course is ideal for anyone about to start or currently learning a language.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this workshop, you will have:

  • Defined clear goals for learning the target language
  • Demonstrated your language awareness
  • Identified appropriate input in the target language
  • Selected and adopted strategies for practising the language
  • Identified strategies for obtaining feedback

Course outline:
This interactive seminar includes learning activities and guided exercises to help you develop useful strategies for learning another language. There is no formal assessment.

There is a short break half-way through the session, and tea/coffee and a light refreshment are provided. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments if you wish.

Class limit:
This course is limited to a maximum of 24 participants, so please enrol early.

Sara Cotterall (Dip TESOL, MA, PhD) has been teaching and researching languages for more than three decades. In the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at VUW she worked with language teachers and learners for almost 20 years. She has also taught in Australia, China, England, France, Japan and the United Arab Emirates. In this workshop, Sara distils her experience into practical advice aimed at making language learning more efficient, more successful and more fun.
